Offending Audiences – Don’t If You’re Not Either Madonna or Pussy Riot :-)

Madonna is famous – some would say infamous – for provoking her audience. In a similar way the female group Pussy Riot provoked russians during recent Russian elections in their effort to demonstrate they didn’t want Putin back as President when they began dancing in a Russian Orthodox Church. Madona increased her audience by offending quite a few people.

Is this YOUR way to success?

If you’re a Muslim (or Jewish) businessman, you won’t need to explain you don’t want any pork. People will know this beforehand. Just as vegetarians don’t eat meat for consciousness’ sake, and are respected, so obviously cultural or religious eating habits should be respected. Do you see any vegetarians greeting their meat-eating friends with words such as: “You dirty pig-eating G D SoB?”

Probably not – and if he did behave in such a manner, you would probably find it highly distasteful, if not even stupid to behave in that manner.

What is less known is that Jews consider shrimps, lobster and other seafoods unclean. When this is served, polite words will be much better received than screaming your way to instruct the ‘infidel mob’… 🙂

Similarly, cursing is offensive to quite a few people, and there are many other things we shouldn’t do. Chinese people burp to indicate they loved the meal, but doing so in Western Europe would be rather impolite in most homes.

What IS My Point?
If you want to earn money online, you should be polite in your ways. Don’t argue unnecessarily, but try to convince your audience with good common sense. When I share jokes on my Danish blog, I usually remove unnecessary cursing – just as a matter of courtesy. Cortesy can be defined as having ‘good manners’

A famous saying says: “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.”

In other words, people are not convinced by harsh arguments, but by your example – by your actions.

What is your experience with cultural differences when earning money online? Please feel free to share your experiences. Thanks beforehand for participating. 🙂

  1. You can also see the error of offending an entire municipality when Gordon Ramsay (from Kitchen Nightmares) had to teach this lesson to a lady who thought she could take ownership of the word “Hon” – which she has now relinquished as she now acknowledges it as a common word… See more here: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-11-07/entertainment/bs-ae-hon-trademark-renounce-20111107_1_cafe-hon-hon-trademark-tv-chef-gordon-ramsay.

Wondering about the word “apple”, though… 🙂
